What is the purpose of the Long Valley Road Upgrades?

Once completed, works will:

  • improve road safety for all road users;
  • freight connectivity; and
  • reduce the risk of serious and fatal injury crashes.

What stage is the project at?

Works on the junction upgrades and overtaking lane with commence in early 2022 and are expected to be completed in December, 2022, weather permitting.

Is the Department considering lowering the speed limit on Long Valley Road?

The speed limit on Long Valley Road has previously been investigated by both the Department and external traffic consultants as part of a number of safety reviews conducted into the road in recent years. Given the extent and nature of roadside development adjacent Long Valley Road, the existing 100km/h speed limit was considered to be appropriate for a rural road of this type, as prescribed by the Speed Limit Guidelines for South Australia, and no changes to the existing speed limit were proposed.

These upgrades are expected to improve road conditions along Long Valley Road and reinforce the application of a 100km/h speed limit.

Is a second overtaking lane going to be constructed between Gemmell Road, Gemmells, and Mine Flat Road, Strathalbyn?

The Department is investigating the construction of a potential new overtaking lane on Long Valley Road, between Gemmell Road, Gemmells and Mine Flat Road, Strathalbyn. Some early survey work has been completed but this project is in the investigation stage with no design finalised. Selected locations for survey work do not necessarily correspond to areas that may be impacted by any potential project.

How will traffic be managed during construction?

The construction program will be carefully staged to reduce the impacts on traffic as much as practically possible. Advanced notice, including signage, will be provided when there are impacts on road users.

How will noise be managed during construction?

Construction noise cannot be eliminated altogether, however works will be managed to minimise disturbance to nearby properties as much as practically possible with a range of control measures to be implemented, including:

  • providing advance notice of works to residents;
  • wherever possible, scheduling the noisiest activities during the day or early evening;
  • maintaining machinery to a high standard to reduce noise levels and minimise vibration;
  • using a low noise reversing squawker, instead of the traditional reversing beeper;
  • handling materials in a way that reduces the number of vehicle movements;
  • enclosing stationary small plant and equipment such as generators to reduce noise levels;
  • monitoring noise and vibration levels where required to ensure they do not exceed compliance levels; and
  • consideration of alternative construction methodologies where appropriate.

What impact will there be on vegetation in the area as part of the project?

Consideration is always given to limit the removal of vegetation at project sites as much as possible, however for larger upgrades, it is likely some vegetation will be impacted.
