Brighton Road Intersection Upgrades
Brighton Road and Edwards Street junction
Work is now complete on the upgrade of the Brighton Road and Edwards Street junction at South Brighton in Adelaide’s southwest, improving road safety and public transport efficiency.
The project included the installation of traffic lights, a signalised pedestrian and a cyclist crossing to improve accessibility and enhance safety for everyone using the road.
As well as improving pedestrian and cyclist safety, the upgrades will ease congestion through this busy intersection as well as the surrounding area, reducing frustration for local residents and businesses.
As part of the project, a dedicated right-turn lane has been installed on Edwards Street into the Brighton Central Shopping Centre. This will improve access, especially during peak periods.
For those who catch public transport, a new bus stop 37 (east) has been installed south of the junction.
Further improvements to the junction include upgraded LED lighting, new kerbing and gutters, resurfaced road pavement and new line-marking.
Following community consultation, the push button crossing on Brighton Road, south of Gregory Street, was retained. It has been sequenced with the new junction to manage traffic flow.
The works were jointly funded by the Australian and South Australian governments as part of the $30 million ($15 million each) Brighton Road Intersection Improvements project, and supported approximately 20 jobs during construction.
Concept design
Following community consultation in March and April 2022, concept design was updated to retain the Pedestrian Actuated Crossing (signalised push-button crossing) on Brighton Road, south of Gregory Street. In response to community feedback, this crossing will be sequenced with the new junction to manage traffic flow. Please refer to the updated concept design below.
The updated concept design has been developed to address the project objectives, work within the site constraints and consider all relevant environmental, social, safety and economic factors.
This design aims to balance a number of factors including traffic performance, project cost and impacts.
This junction serves as the main access from Brighton Road to and from Brighton Central Shopping Centre and Hungry Jack's. People exiting Edwards Street can experience long delays, as well as a number of other key challenges including:
- road safety issues at the junction, especially for local access (right turn movements)
- local access reliability issues at the junction, especially during peak periods
- local access and safety issues for pedestrian movements at the junction.
The design features include:
- Signalised intersection to improve access to Brighton Road with increased safety and efficiency
- Controlled pedestrian crossing to improve safety and access to shopping precinct
- Dedicated right turn to improve access into Brighton Central Shopping Centre and traffic flow along Edwards Street
- Retention of the Pedestrian Actuated Crossing (signalised push-button crossing) on Brighton Road, south of Gregory Street.
In response to community feedback, this crossing will be sequenced with the new junction to manage traffic flow. Please refer to the updated concept design below.
