Adelaide Hills Intersections Upgrade Initiative

About the initiative

The Adelaide Hills Intersections Upgrade features two locations:

  • Woodside Road and Old Princes Highway intersection, Nairne
  • Onkaparinga Valley Road, Tiers Road and Nairne Road intersection, Woodside

Woodside Road and Old Princes Highway intersection, Nairne

The Department for Infrastructure and Transport (the Department) recently delivered improved safety and traffic efficiency through the construction of a four-way, single lane roundabout to realign the Woodside Road and Saleyard Road junctions with the Old Princes Highway, Nairne. The roundabout was opened to traffic in December 2021.

The upgrade will reduce delays for Woodside Road traffic, maintain a good level of intersection performance and cater for future growth. The upgrade will also improve safety for pedestrian and cyclist movements in the area, particularly for Nairne Primary School students.

The intersection of Woodside Road and Old Princes Highway is located on the western outskirts of Nairne within a 50km/h speed zone. Since the completion of the Bald Hills Interchange project in 2016, traffic volumes at the Woodside Road and Old Princes Highway intersection have increased by approximately 10-15%.

Project Overview:

  • Construction of a four-way single lane roundabout, including realignment of the two T-junctions of Old Princes Highway with Saleyard Road and Old Princes Highway with Woodside Road
  • 2.5 metre wide, New Shared Use Path for the extent of works.
  • Provision of pedestrian fencing to encourage crossing at desirable locations only.
  • Relocation of the pedestrian actuated crossing (push button) on the Old Princes Highway eastern approach approximately 70 metres east of the roundabout.

Major construction works for the project commenced in late July 2021 and were completed in February 2022 with the roundabout open to traffic .

Landscaping works are being undertaken on and surrounding the roundabout and will be complete late September 2022.

Onkaparinga Valley Road, Tiers Road and Nairne Road intersection, Woodside

November 2023 update

The Australian Government has announced the outcomes of its Infrastructure Investment Program Review. The Review recommended that the Onkaparinga Valley Road - Tiers Road - Nairne Road Intersection Upgrade will not receive Australian Government funding at this time. We are currently examining the outcomes of the Review and will share more information with the community as it’s available.

The Australian Government has committed $2 million within its Roads of Strategic Importance program, over the 2019-20 to 2022-23 period, towards improving freight productivity and efficiency through the upgrade of the Onkaparinga Valley Road, Tiers Road and Nairne Road intersection.

The upgrade will seek to improve intersection safety and operation, balancing local community and industry requirements, and cater for future growth.

The intersection of Onkaparinga Valley Road, Tiers Road and Nairne Road forms a staggered-T arrangement and is located within a 50km/h speed zone in the Woodside township. Onkaparinga Valley Road carries around 10,500 vehicles per day to the north of the intersection and 8,500 vehicles per day to the south of the intersection. Nairne Road carries approximately 4000 vehicles per day.

A Planning Study for the proposed intersection upgrade is underway and community and stakeholder engagement forms an important part of the study. As planning progresses further consultation with landowners, businesses and residents will occur to help inform the preferred concept and design.

Woodside Community Information Sessions

In December 2019, Community Information Sessions were held in Woodside. The planning study team doorknocked and met with around 30 businesses adjacent the intersection, and provided displays advertising the event in several public spaces around Woodside.

Around 60 people attended the community session to speak to the planning study team, hear project details, ask questions, and provide feedback. Thank you to everyone that attended.

A note to the Woodside community

Following our Community Information Sessions in December 2019, our intent was to engage further with community on the intersection upgrade in early 2020.

The tragic Cudlee Creek fire then occurred and changed priorities. In consultation with the Adelaide Hills Council (AHC), a decision was made to postpone direct engagement with the community until after the immediate bushfire recovery period.
