Adelaide Road, Mount Barker Roundabout Upgrade

The South Australian Government has committed $40 million as part of the 2023-2024 State Budget to upgrade the roundabout located at the intersection of Adelaide Road, Alexandrina Road, Wellington Road, and Flaxley Road in Mount Barker. This has been identified as a priority upgrade within the Mount Barker Infrastructure Deed, which will support nearby residential developments occurring within the Mount Barker Urban Growth Area and the broader Mount Barker area.

Traffic volumes on these roads and the associated delays are expected to increase significantly as a result of development occurring throughout the Mount Barker Urban Growth Area, particularly during the peak periods.

The upgrade will include the provision of additional lanes, shared use paths and road lighting improvements. The project will cater for the increase in traffic, and ensure safe and efficient access for all road users.

March 2025

Since the last project update in October 2024, we have progressed the detailed design for the upgrade. Following further technical investigations and community feedback, we have included some refinements in the final design.

The refinements include:

  • The addition of a new dedicated right turn access into the Mount Barker High School on Wellington Road
  • Modified alignment of the slip lane from Alexandrina Road onto Wellington Road to retain significant trees
  • New shared path linking the relocated Wellington Road actuated pedestrian crossing with the new pedestrian refuge on Alexandrina Road
  • Improvements to the Keith Stephenson Park car park.

This upgrade aims to improve intersection performance and connectivity to support growth in the area.

Works are planned to start in mid-2025 and expected to be completed mid-2026.

Adelaide Road, Mount Barker Roundabout Upgrade Design

The project will also include a new, dual lane roundabout at the intersection of Adelaide Road, Alexandrina Road, Wellington Road and Flaxley Road.

Adelaide Road and Flaxley Road will receive new signalised pedestrian crossings, while the existing crossing on Wellington Road will be relocated to improve safety. The roundabout will also include new Shared Use Paths and road lighting.

The design will improve intersection performance and connectivity to support growth in the area, including the recently announced expansion of the Mount Barker Hospital.

Community engagement

Insights from the local community and key stakeholders along with technical assessments have played a key role in informing the design for the upgrade at the intersection of Adelaide Road, Alexandrina Road, Wellington Road, and Flaxley Road in Mount Barker.

We are committed to working with the local schools and community to ensure the upgrade works are delivered smoothly and we continue to minimise any potential impacts.
