Marion Road and Sir Donald Bradman Drive Intersection Upgrade

The Australian and South Australian governments have committed $85 million (50:50) towards an upgrade of the intersection of Marion Road and Sir Donald Bradman Drive, Brooklyn Park.

Marion Road and Sir Donald Bradman Drive are major traffic, freight and public transport routes with around 60,000 vehicles passing through the intersection every day.

Currently this intersection is over capacity and becomes very congested. Road users often experience delays travelling in all directions, particularly during the morning and evenings peaks. With increasing demand, the current intersection will not cater for future road user demands.

The upgrade will improve traffic flow and safety on these roads, while also improving the reliability and amenity of Sir Donald Bradman Drive as the ‘Gateway to Adelaide’, particularly between Adelaide Airport and the CBD.

Latest news

In mid-2023 we released a concept plan showing the proposed upgrade and sought input from the community to help us gather local insights, including what landscaping and potential new public open space elements were considered most important to you. Read all about it in our latest Project Update.

Upgrade features

The upgrade includes:

  • increased through-lanes on Sir Donald Bradman Drive heading west and new dedicated turning lanes on Sir Donald Bradman Drive in both directions
  • extended storage for the left turn lane onto Sir Donald Bradman Drive heading west
  • new LED road lighting, asphalt, drainage, kerbing and gutters
  • upgraded pedestrian crossings at the intersection and on Marion Road, improving safety for pedestrians
  • new dedicated bicycle lanes on all approaches, improving safety for cyclists
  • urban design, landscaping and potential new public open space

This project is expected to support approximately 125 full time equivalent jobs per annum averaged over the construction period.

Project timing

Site investigations and early works have commenced and will continue as part of the detailed design process throughout 2024. Major construction is expected to commence in late 2024 and be completed in early 2026.

Minimising impacts

There will be some impacts to trees and vegetation as a result of this upgrade however the project team is committed to reducing the impact through the detailed design process as much as possible. Existing vegetation, landscaping and the Boulevard of Honour are all being assessed and carefully considered.

Community engagement

Community and stakeholder engagement is important for the successful delivery of this project.

We would like to thank those who attended the information sessions in mid-2023 and provided feedback. We received a lot of valuable feedback including via emails, and online submissions.

Read our latest Project Update that summarises the feedback that we received.

What’s next

A summary of what we heard during this engagement process will be shared with the community once the feedback has been collated. These insights will then be used to help inform the detailed design.

Input from the community will continue to play an important role to inform the detailed design of the urban and community open spaces. More information about these opportunities will be available in the coming months.
