A Friday Note - 3 March 2017
Clipsal V8s aren’t the only thing roaring, so are the temperatures across our state.
While summer has officially ended, the fire danger season hasn’t. With autumn predicted to be warmer and drier than average, South Australians need to remain alert.
This week a number of incidents remind us, once again, of the need to exercise vigilance on our roads and rail.
A woman struck by a train on the Seaford line was lucky to walk away with minor injuries. While we continue to invest in safety upgrades along our rail corridors, as a community we need to reduce these risks. Be aware of dangers at rail crossings and don’t put your life on the line. Following two fatal motorbike crashes this week, as of midnight last night, our current road toll this is now at 12 fatalities. These incidents are a tragic reminder to slow down and take extra precautions.
A new DPTI Employee Security Guide is now available to provide staff with general security awareness information in an engaging and easily accessible document. It covers various topics such as access card guidelines, visitor protocols and information on identifying and responding to suspicious activities within the workplace.
Gender equality is about removing bias and barriers and creating a workplace where both women and men can thrive. This week DPTI Chiefs signed our gender equality in leadership action plan2016-2020 which outlines our department’s commitment to gender equality.
International Women’s Day will be observed on 8 March, celebrating the social, cultural and political achievements of women, while also using the day as a catalyst for change to create more flexible, inclusive, equal cultures. This year’s theme is #BeBoldForChange and all staff are encouraged to participate in upcoming gender equality events during the week of 6 - 10 March 2017, to consider how you will play your part.
It’s March in Adelaide which means a particularly busy period on our roads and our transport network. Remember to plan ahead, with a little extra travel time or consider catching public transport, especially with road and parking restrictions in place. Please slow down and watch out for pedestrians.
During March a lot of people will use different booking services, including taxis, which can make for a safer and smarter choice to get home safely after a big night out. However, be aware there are companies currently providing ridesharing services in Adelaide who are not accredited by our department – which means we can’t verify their criminal history, driving record, if they are medically fit to drive, nor if their vehicle has been checked for roadworthiness and insurance. IN THE COMMUNITY
More than 60 workers from the O-Bahn City Access Project took part in Clean Up Australia Day for businesses.
The enthusiastic volunteers spent an hour cleaning up rubbish from adjacent Park Lands, car parks, footpaths and the project site. In total, nearly 40 bags of rubbish were collected and recycled appropriately.
A number of grants are now open through the Office for Recreation and Sport which provide assistance to recreation and sporting organisations helping to provide functional, inclusive and fit for purpose facilities. Full list of open grants here.

Thank you to everyone involved in the removal of the screens on the South Road tram overpass. Works were carried out at very short notice with no interruption to tram services and minimum impact on South Road users and the local community. The job attracted a lot of media attention and crews maintained a high level of professionalism under the scrutiny of the media at all times. The safe and efficient manner in which the work was complete is a testament to exceptional planning and team work.
Special mention to: Kai Keller, Matthew Elliot, Malcolm Thomas, Joe Ciacciarelli, Nathan Kane, Nathan Cockayne, Ben Ronke, Stephen Goldfinch, as well as contractors Max Cranes and Complete Traffic Services.
David Whiterod, Office of Local Government, recently received several phone calls from a member of the public clearly distressed about a council matter. David went out of his way to work with the Council Chief Executive, provide support for the person, and resolve the matter. A good result in difficult circumstances – great public service.
Well done to David Austin and his team in payroll for resolving the issue of how the back pay was calculated for our rail staff. The team not only resolved the issue but formulated a strategy which will assist employees that have any further issues with the information provided. One of our train drivers wrote a specially generous note about David’s efforts. Thank you.
