A Friday Note - 19 June 2015
This week a number of tragic incidents occurred on our roads and rail lines. While the causes are being investigated, it is a reminder of the challenge we all face to improve safety. Incidents are infrequent and I appreciate the efforts of all who continue to design and implement initiatives to improve safety. However, as we’ve seen, there’s much work still to be done to improve the infrastructure, manage speed and improve behaviour and compliance so that we can prevent injuries and fatalities and the trauma such incidents cause. For example, the results of the national AUSTRANS operation, in which our compliance officers were involved, showed there are still too many heavy vehicles on the road that are not safe. This isn’t acceptable and we’ll be continuing our compliance checks throughout the year and our efforts to work with the industry to improve the situation. Following the accidents on the Sturt and Princes highways on Tuesday night, many staff were called upon to assist manage traffic and return roads to a safe condition. This included the staff from our Murray Bridge office, the Traffic Management Centre at Norwood, Grant Wilksch from our Structural group, Jeff Gray from Field Services and the Murray Bridge and Nuriootpa Field Services crews, including Lou Boughen and Jeff Scheiner.
After the fatality on the Outer Harbor line on Monday, staff from the Operational Control Centre, Rail Operations, Signals, Integrated Transport Services, Investigations and Customer and Passenger Service Officers worked together with SAPOL to control the incident area, provide alternatives for passengers and return the line to service as quickly as possible. The entire effort was coordinated by Darryl Smith who acted as the department’s incident site manager and did an exceptional job.
Both responses were very comprehensive team efforts involving long hours and under difficult circumstances. Thank you to those involved for your professionalism.
Manager, Rail Safety and Performance, Roydon Pye
The Workplace Wellbeing and Transition Unit within People and Performance provides a range of services to assist employees during the departmental Rejuvenation. These are being delivered in line with the Guiding Principles for Transition and include support for employees not transitioning into new organisational structures in their substantive section. I have asked managers to meet with Mary Trestrail to discuss the strengths, skills and experience of those that may not be transitioning immediately so that, where appropriate, a match can be quickly identified for further opportunities. My aim is to have as many people as possible, who do not immediately transition, placed into other roles across the department.
A number of people have been contacting Gabby O'Neill about their individual circumstances. Negotiations are continuing with the Rail, Tram and Bus Union. In the event of any further industrial action, the department will make every endeavour to minimise inconvenience for passengers.
Smooth implementation recognised
Last Friday evening a function was held to recognise staff from the Land Services Business Reform Program, Land Titles SA and the State Valuation Office. These groups have worked together over the last four years to implement the new South Australian Integrated Land Information System (SAILIS). SAILIS went live on 27 April 2015 and was delivered on time, on budget and with little fuss. This is a great achievement. Well done to all.
APY Lands Waste and Landfill program
A contract has been awarded to the Regional Anangu Services Aboriginal Corporation (RASAC) to construct a new landfill site for the Yunyarinyi (Kenmore Park) community. This milestone is a result of the commitment of project leader Stuart Sturgess and many people and divisions across the department working to improve infrastructure and services for those in the region.
Customer Service commendation
Well done to Dylan Campbell who received a commendation for the outstanding service he showed an Adelaide Metro customer. Dylan went out of his way to assist Peter arrange a new identification card and helped take the required photo.
