A Friday Note - 11 December 2015
Christmas break planned yet? It is not too late, and with Christmas nearly upon us I want to remind all staff to please ensure you take a proper break over the festive period. Plan ahead and speak to your manager and colleagues to see what can be done ahead of time. It is important to spend quality time with family and friends, and a proper rest will help you to recharge and come back in the New Year feeling refreshed.

The Government Employee Housing (GEH) area in our Property Directorate has come to the aid of a family of six that tragically lost their home in the recent Pinery bushfire. David, a CFS volunteer and father of four, returned home from fighting the fire to find that his own house in Hamley Bridge had been completely destroyed by the fire. The family is keen to stay in the area and GEH has been able to help them do this by housing them in a government owned property until they can re-build. Staff from the Office for Design and Architecture have organised a Christmas bake fundraiser next Monday at 10.30am at 28 Leigh Street. Bake a cake, buy a cake and contribute to the Pinery Fire fund.
The Risk and Assurance team has undertaken a review of our Department’s governance processes and made a number of recommendations. In particular, the report highlights the need for clarity of purpose and the removal of duplication across our governance committees. Click here to view a proposed governance structure, and I’m really keen to get your views on the proposal – what might we need to do differently? What is missing? I note that our approach to achieving best practice for the Disability sector is not reflected in this model – where might this best sit?

THE VOICE OF PUBLIC TRANSPORT
The rich tones of Safety and Policy Program Officer Bernhard Sayer will soon be heard at train stations across the network. Bernhard has been selected as ‘the voice’ for our train announcement re-recording.
PUBLIC TRANSPORT ETIQUETTE
I’m always open to new and creative ways of engaging with our customers, and our recent public transport etiquette campaign on Facebook has certainly caught people’s attention. Check out the posts here, and extra points for anyone who can identify Santa?
Graeme Brown and Peter Short travelled to Port Augusta to work with the supervisors of the rural and remote services section. The team continues to unearth local issues and it is great to see everyone in the regional areas getting involved and working collaboratively to identify solutions to problems.
While their supervisors attended the workshop, Rural and Remote Services staff attended a conference which focused on providing relevant information on living and working regionally. Some great sessions were held throughout the two day conference including white ribbon, work, health and safety, manual handling, and an engaging session on living with wildlife, as you can see from the image below left of Eric Huynh, Unit Manager Construction bravely handling a snake
On Wednesday 9 December Shift Coordinator Greg Kinross passed away after a very short bout with cancer. Greg originally joined the State Transport Authority as a Bus Operator in 1988, and in the late 1990s he transferred over to Rail Operations as a Passenger Service Assistant and was later promoted to Shift Coordinator in 2007.
Greg will be missed by all work mates in Rail Operations and those who knew him in our Department. He is survived by his lovely wife Sue, his daughters and grandchildren. Our deepest condolences are extended to his family, RIP Greg.
Sam Brown from our Operational Planning area has worked extremely hard to ensure that students here in Adelaide for the Pacific School Games have been able to get to and from the various venues on public transport, including additional charters specifically for some groups. Great work Sam.
