CONNECT - Message from the Chief Executive

Dear all,

A cool weekend approaches. Could be a good opportunity to check out Channel Nine’s satirical comedy ,PLONK, filmed in SA, supported by the South Australian Tourism Commission and featuring SA’s winemakers, personalities and business owners.


Earlier in the week a new online resource to improve road safety and driver licensing outcomes for Aboriginal people was launched. It was a very positive event that demonstrated the commitment our staff have to improving road safety awareness in Aboriginal communities. Aboriginal people are over represented in our road fatality statistics, which is simply unacceptable. On the right track acknowledges the cultural and language needs of Aboriginal people and aims to increase the capacity of people and communities across the state to gain driver’s licences as well as supporting them to become safer drivers and passengers. This is a first for Australia and I’m very proud of our department’s involvement in it. Congratulations to Margaret Howard’s Safer Travel and Behaviour Change team, particularly Benjamin Stewart and Samantha Brown.


Letters for staff transitioning into ‘like for like’ roles are currently being processed. I know that our HR Customer Support team has been busy drafting this paperwork so many of you will receive your letters from your manager shortly.

We have recently held a number of discussions with the Public Service Association (PSA) following feedback from the paid time meetings organised by Gabby O’Neill. We have actively engaged with the PSA to consider their feedback and have taken action where we can to improve the rejuvenation process. In summary:

  • all restricted (fenced calls) will be open for two weeks
  • a review has taken place of ongoing employees in long term acting arrangements (this includes higher level engagements and additional duties allowances/higher duties). On a case by case basis the transition team has been working through those identified with managers.
  • as part of my intention to retain as many ongoing DPTI employees as possible and provide the right opportunities for people, before advertising any roles on, managers will need to go to the transition team to ensure a thorough search across DPTI has occurred


I thank the union representatives and delegates for yesterday meeting with us in regards to the Across Government Facilities Management Arrangements (AGFMA) trades employees who will be affected by the closure of the Royal Adelaide Hospital. A consultation forum will follow and support all DPTI AGFMA trades employees in transitioning into the new structure. This meeting was a positive step in moving forwards and providing employees greater clarity.

This year’s NAIDOC Week officially comes to an end on Sunday. Each year the week provides an opportunity to celebrate Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander history, culture and achievements and recognise the contributions that Indigenous Australians make to our country and our society. This department has a number of Aboriginal staff that are very passionate about their roles and are leading efforts to partner with communities and improve the services we offer our customers.


Earlier in the week Kirsteen Mackay was announced as South Australia’s next Government Architect. This is an important role in helping shape the development of Adelaide and South Australia and ensuring quality urban design. Kirsteen will bring her extensive international experience to the role as she leads the design review program she helped shape. Kirsteen will also lead the department’s Architecture and Built Environment directorate.


A new technique is being trialled by our Rail Care group to improve the stability and appearance of embankments along rail corridors. Promoting plant growth along these areas is one of the best ways of achieving both, however the often steep slopes makes the task challenging. The new initiative involves laying a honey-comb type material along the embankment, which is filled with soil to stabilise the structure while allowing water to penetrate and stimulate plant growth. This innovative technique is being tested at the Adelaide Showground train station with more than 1500 plants already in place. If successful it will be implemented along other rail corridor embankments.


Final ITLUP released

The final Integrated Transport and Land Use Plan was released this week. This plan is the result of months of work by our Development Division, which has travelled the state to talk with the community, local council and industry to ensure the final version reflected the needs of the state. It’s the first time a plan has been developed that considers land planning side by side with transport requirements and will be fundamental in providing the mobility our people and businesses need to further develop this state. Congratulations to Phil Lawes and his team for this extraordinary effort.

30-Year Plan - consultation milestone

In June the Strategic Planning Unit completed a comprehensive program of workshops with senior staff from the 27 councils in Greater Adelaide to obtain their ideas and priorities ahead of the release of the update to The 30-Year Plan for Greater Adelaide. Further briefings, workshops and information sessions will be held in the near future with State Government agencies and a project reference group prior to a draft update of the plan being released to the public for consultation.

The footy

Under difficult circumstances last night, our rail and bus management teams performed exceptionally well to provide transport for many of the 45,000 plus fans that attended the AFL match at Adelaide Oval. Providing such services in addition to catering for those travelling home from work is always challenging and last night's effort reflected the talents and resilience of our staff. Very well done.
