Anchor needed on the Murray

15 May 2014

Boat operators are reminded they are required to carry an anchor on their vessel at all times.

“Previously it was acceptable to have a pair of paddles, oars, but this was found to be insufficient once proper flows return to the Murray,” A/Manager of Marine Operations and Response, Peter Thomas, said.

The anchor is intended to stop the boat from being carried away by strong currents or winds in the event of an engine failure.

All anchors should be a suitable size for the vessel, and have sufficient cable, or rope attached to work properly in deep water.

The Department of Planning, Transport and Infrastructure (DPTI) encourages boat operators and other river users to report any hazards, offences/incidents which they have witnesses occurring along the river, to Murray Watch hotline on 8531 0710, which a 24 hour 7 day a week service.
