Biggest cruise ship yet to visit KI

25 Jan 2013

Retail and tourism businesses in Kangaroo Island have begun extensive preparations to welcome cruise ship The Amsterdam, which will dock off Penneshaw on Thursday, February 21, The Islander reports.

The Amsterdam has 1600 passengers plus 600 crew members, the biggest ship yet to visit the island.

It is on a 114-night world cruise. About 70 per cent of passengers are American, Canadian or British, in the “slightly older, more affluent demographic”.

Boaties are reminded to give big boats a wide berth with 38 cruise liners expected to visit South Australia between November and March this year.

Under Federal security law there is 15-metre exclusion zone around cruise ships. However, boaties are reminded of the dangers present when sailing in the vicinity of the big boats – a much larger area than 15 metres.

More details about safe boating near commercial vessels is available on sa.gov.au
