A houseboat at Wombats Rest, downstream of Morgan, recently overturned and started to sink. It is thought this is due to a leak in one pontoon and a failing bilge pump.
Reports from the local slipway operator confirmed that the vessel structure is completely submerged, with only the pontoons visible.
Fortunately, the vessel is securely tied to the bank and has not yet caused any environmental concerns. However, it may become hazardous for boat operators if it is not removed, with the potential for submerged objects, debris, oil slicks or leaking effluent could to pose serious threat to public safety.
Investigations are underway to remove the vessel and to inspect the area for environmental concerns caused by the wreck.
With greater volumes of water expected for the River Murray over coming months, owners and operators are urged to frequently check and maintain their houseboats to ensure a similar situation does not happen again.
