22 Sep 2011

Tailem bend ferry

The refurbished, modernised Tailem Bend ferry will return to service on 27 September.

The Pelican has undergone an extensive refit at a cost of $775 000, which will improve service for users.

The 18-metre steel hull ferry has been fitted with:

  •     a new deck made from extruded aluminium, which is stronger and lighter
  •     six metre long aluminium flaps
  •     a new ferry drive system including touch screen controls
  •     and upgraded electrics for greater reliability.
The hull has been sandblasted and repainted, which will extend the life of the ferry.

There will be a temporary interruption to the Tailem Bend ferry service on Tuesday, 27 September 2011 for the changeover to occur. The ferry service will not be operating between 9.00 am and 4.00 pm.

Alternative crossings are:
Upstream - Swanport Bridge
Downstream - Wellington Ferry

The department thanks ferry users for their patience and understanding.
