Breath testing, inspections keeps ski event safe

07 Nov 2013

Competitors were breath tested and their vessels checked to make sure things went smoothly at the recent Berri ski races.

During the first weekend in November, Ski Racing Australia held the 'Berri 90' ski race classic..

Approximately sixty vessels from SA and interstate participated in the two day event.

Vessels with a crew of a driver, observer and one or two skiers travelled the lengthy course at speeds of up to 160 km/h.

The department’s marine safety officers attended the event to test participants for alcohol and checked the safety items aboard their vessel's.

According to the race policy, competitors were not able to have any alcohol in their blood to take part.

A total of 195 participants were breath tested over the two days and 67 vessels inspected.

Organisers had received a licence to close the waters near Berri during the event.

Vessels ranged from heavily modified ski vessels to 'super' modified ski vessels.
