This Easter, we urge boat owners and other recreational water users to stay at home to help stop the spread of COVID-19.

This Easter, the Department of Planning Transport and Infrastructure is urging boat owners and other recreational water users to stay at home and play your part in stopping the spread of COVID-19.

Current advice specifies you should stay in your home and only leave for essential activities such as work, food shopping, exercise or medical appointments.

If your on water activity needs are essential and you decide to go out, social distancing rules apply both on land and on the water:

• keep 1.5 metres away from others and allow 4 square metres of space for each person on your boat, unless additional passengers are members of your regular household
• where possible, travel directly between your home and the water without additional stops
• pay close attention to hygiene at all public facilities.

In addition to social distancing, if you are heading out on the water, check that you know how to stay safe by:

• wearing the correct lifejacket
• ensuring your safety gear is in good condition
• letting someone know before you go
• checking the weather
• knowing the area.

Please note, in support of social distancing measures to stop the spread of COVID-19, some local councils have closed boat ramps in their regions.
