Secrets beneath the surface

21 Oct 2010

The department has been using sophisticated scanning equipment to locate and document new hazards in the River Murray – even finding sunken houseboats and other materials below the surface.

Low water levels due to drought has meant rock falls and outcrops, bars and snags that were previously not a hazard are now closer to the river surface.

Side imaging sonar was used to find 46 hazards – with 31 of these hazards previously unreported – ranging in depth from almost at the surface to as deep as three metres.

Hazards near the surface that a vessel could hit are being marked and monitoring will continue, so that deeper objects likely to become hazard can be marked.
