Blackwater audits underway

30 Nov 2010

Houseboats on the River Murray are being checked for suitable blackwater disposal systems.

This means that all waste produced on or brought onto any vessel must be stored in a container where it cannot escape.

Earlier this year 120 houseboats in the Mannum region were audited and 57 (47.5%) were compliant – an above average result.

During the past three years, the majority of 470 private vessels audited have been in breach of requirements. Common breaches have included:
  •     absence of deflector plates
  •     pump out points positioned at the incorrect height
  •     flexible pipe work
  •     sewage leaks
  •     fittings allowing potential discharge of sewage directly to river.
The random audit program is set to continue in the future and greywater management requirements will also be audited from 1 January 2011.

For more information about EPA requirements visit www.epa.sa.gov.au/vfm or telephone (08) 8204 2004.
