Burnt out boat safety reminder

27 Nov 2013

The burnt-out chassis of a ski boat that caught fire and sank in October was retrieved recently.

The find is a reminder that the unexpected can easily occur while out on the water.

To give yourself the best chance of avoiding a life threatening problem or surviving an incident please check how to prepare your boat for a day on the water, including the safety gear needed.

The two passengers of the pictured vessel had to jump for their lives after it caught fire on a Saturday morning in October.

Fortunately both survived with the help of passers-by and the Murray River Princess paddle steamer extinguished the flames before nearby trees caught fire.

Using sonar equipment and photos of the incident a department Marine Safety Compliance Officer located the vessel and alerted the salvage crew to its location.

Under legislation a boat’s owner is responsible for retrieving sunken or damaged boats.
