Navigating around oyster farms

27 Feb 2012

Oyster farms are generally located in relatively shallow water, however are often in places that are still navigable by small vessels.

Boaties must be vigilant and stay clear of oyster leases to avoid causing damage to the farms and their vessels.

These sites are indicated with special yellow marks, topped with a yellow cross. There are commonly referred to as a St Andrews Cross.

Support structures are not always on a lease and sites can change so boaties navigating through these areas must be vigilant.

Farms are common in Yorke Peninsula and along the West Coast of Eyre Peninsula near places like Ceduna and Streaky Bay, also in the Coffin Bay area outside of the marked channel.
