The resurfacing blitz across Adelaide to deliver a smoother ride for motorists continues to roll out with major pavement rehabilitation works set to start soon on Cross Road and at the South Eastern Freeway’s intersection with Cross Road, Portrush Road and Glen Osmond Road.
The works to improve the road surface on a 1.3 kilometre section of Cross Road between Hexham Avenue and Glen Osmond Road, in both directions, will start from Sunday with completion expected in early December 2021.
Pavement rehabilitation works will then move to the intersection of the SE Freeway, Portrush Road, Cross Road and Glen Osmond Road with completion there expected in February 2022.
The works involve removing existing pavement and replacing it with asphalt to ensure the long term safety and integrity of Cross Road and the South Eastern Freeway intersection for all road users.
The intersection of the SE Freeway, Portrush Road, Cross Road and Glen Osmond Road carries more than 72,000 vehicles per day. Cross Road carries approximately 33,000 vehicles per day and forms part of Adelaide’s Outer Ring Route, connecting to export and import gateways and intermodal terminals.
To minimise overall disruption the works on Cross Road will mostly be undertaken at night and in stages, moving progressively from Hexham Avenue to Glen Osmond Road.
These works will complement the pavement rehabilitation works that are already well advanced on the Freeway between the Tollgate and Crafers. The vast majority of those works are now complete, with 82,000 tonnes of asphalt having been laid.
In addition to the pavement rehabilitation works, major construction is scheduled to commence in late 2021 on the $61 million Cross Road and Fullarton Road Intersection Upgrade, which is jointly funded by the Australian and South Australian governments (50:50). Once complete, the upgrade will improve travel times and road safety, increase intersection capacity and enhance network reliability.
The Cross Road asphalt works form part of the State Government’s $58 million Metro Road Stimulus Program, while the works at the SE Freeway, Portrush Road, Cross Road and Glen Osmond Road intersection are jointly funded (80:20) by the Australian and South Australian governments.
