Ride right during the Tour Down Under

Tuesday, 15 January 2019

With Adelaide putting its focus on the highly successful Tour Down Under, bicycles are being primed to join in the fun or, in some cases, at least dragged out of an 11-month hibernation.

Either way, if you’re jumping on your bike in the coming days there are resources that can help you stay upright and safe in the saddle.

For new riders and those dusting off the cobwebs, the best place to start is the Cycle Instead Guide for New and Rusty Riders, which offers practical information for riders of all ages.

Beyond that, there are other resources that you’ll be keen to investigate.

Plan well

You can easily plan ahead for your ride around Adelaide with the Cycle Instead Journey Planner.

This is a valuable tool for experienced and novice riders alike with the ability to customize your route to suit your level of fitness and confidence, using bike lanes, main roads, local streets, off-road paths and some unsealed paths.

Know your stuff

Brushing up on cycling road laws is always a good idea for newbies, returnees or avid cyclists to make sure you’re up to date and playing it safe on the road.

You can download DPTI’s free Cycling and the Law booklet to make sure you know the latest laws.

Bikes on trains

Did you know you can take your bike on Adelaide Metro trains for free outside of peak times, when space is available?

There are also secure bike cages and keyed bike lockers at many of Adelaide’s most popular public transport locations and access can be easily arranged by calling the Adelaide Metro InfoLine on 1300 311 108 or by visiting an InfoCentre.

You’ll find all the information you need about travelling with your bike on the Adelaide Metro Bikes On Board web page.
