Don’t stress! Take the Footy Express this AFL season

Monday, 11 March 2024

The State Government in partnership with AFL Clubs, Adelaide and Port Adelaide, is encouraging footy fans to catch the free Footy Express this season.

Dedicated Adelaide Oval Footy Express bus, train and tram services will again be free this season to everyone with a valid ticket attending Crows and Port home games, including Gather Round games next month.

Port Adelaide Brownlow Medallist Ollie Wines and three-time Crows Best and Fairest Winner Rory Laird are Footy Express Ambassadors for 2024 and helped launch a new Think! Road Safety campaign, urging footy fans to leave the car at home.

The new campaign, featuring Wines and Laird, tells fans ‘Don’t Stress. Take the Footy Express’ in a bid to remove traffic-related stress and driver distraction when getting to and from games.

Research conducted by the Department for Infrastructure and Transport shows that in the five AFL seasons 2018-2022, there were a reported 1311 casualties including more than 1200 serious injuries and 87 fatalities. Driver inattention was a contributing factor in 40 per cent of these fatal crashes.

In total, 117 lives were lost on South Australian roads last year, demonstrating the importance of recognising and positively changing driver behaviour and attitudes.

The Think! Road Safety campaign will run for the home and away season and will feature in-stadium messaging in thoroughfares and entrances, digital screens at Adelaide Railway Station, on Adelaide Metro vehicles and across social media.

The ‘Don’t Stress. Take the Footy Express’ campaign forms part of the State Government’s commitment to South Australia’s Road Safety Strategy to 2031.

The first Footy Express services for 2024 will run this Sunday when Port Adelaide takes on the Eagles at 3:30pm.
