Signing up to prevent wildlife deaths on Kangaroo Island

Thursday, 29 June 2023

Eight newly designed wildlife warning signs have been installed across six locations on Kangaroo Island in a bid to curb roadkill and improve road safety.

Following concerns from the Kangaroo Island Wildlife Network, locals and tourists, the State Government partnered with Kangaroo Island Council to deliver unique signs that alert motorists to the presence of wildlife and encourage them to slow down and take extra care when driving.

Signs have been installed on both State Government and Council roads, including popular tourist locations like Playford Highway, Arranmore Road near Kingscote Airport, and on the approach to Penneshaw terminal.

Road users are encouraged to slow down and take extra care at dusk and dawn, and always drive to the conditions.

The State Government’s commitment to improving safety outcomes on regional and remote roads is comprehensively demonstrated through the Road Safety Action Plan 2023-2025.

This initiative is a fine example of the State Government working with local councils to deliver road safety outcomes not only to benefit local, mainland, interstate, and international visitors, but also the precious wildlife that call Kangaroo Island home.

Ongoing consultation will continue over the coming months to ensure the signs have
been installed at the most effective locations.
