The State Government is supporting regional councils to light up prominent landmarks in yellow to continue important road safety conversations in communities across South Australia state during National Road Safety Week.
Grants have been provided to eight regional councils to support community awareness as part of the State Government’s continued commitment to improve regional road safety as outlined in South Australia’s Road Safety Strategy to 2031.
The successful applicants are:
- Port Augusta City Council
- Kingston District Council
- Mid Murray Council
- Copper Coast Council
- The Flinders Ranges Council
- District Council of Robe
- District Council of Karoonda East Murray
- Coorong District Council.
Buildings and landmarks lit up in Think! Road Safety yellow will be visible to road users on key routes throughout South Australia, including Augusta Highway, Princes Highway, Dukes Highway and Southern Ports Highway.
The use of yellow lighting and advertising along the road network aims to spread awareness of National Road Safety Week messaging and encourage passing motorists to carefully consider their behaviour – sparking the important conversations necessary to create positive change and deliver safer outcomes for all road users.
National Road Safety Week is held between 14 and 21 May each year.
Whether you are travelling to work, visiting friends, picking up the kids or heading off on holiday on our regional roads, we all need to take responsibility to make our roads safer by embracing this year’s theme, Pledge to drive so others survive.
With more than half of all crashes (58 per cent) where lives are lost, and 34 per cent of serious injury crashes, occurring on regional and remote roads, the State Government is focused on working closely with local councils and communities to tackle the devastating impact of road trauma on our communities.
Improving safety on regional and remote roads is one of the key focus areas of the Road Safety Action Plan 2023-2025.
