Upgrade complete for a shipshape Kingscote Jetty

Kingscote Jetty can now be safely enjoyed by locals and tourists for many more years to come, following the completion of vital upgrade and refurbishment works.

Works to upgrade and refurbish the Kingscote Main Jetty and the nearby Fisherman’s Wharf and Screw Pile jetties on Kangaroo Island have been completed in early April and all the jetties are back open to the public.

These essential works have ensured the long-term structural integrity of the jetties and delivered a safe and reliable facility for the local community.

The completed works included:

• re-decking on the Kingscote main jetty;
• repair and replacement of structural components including new piling and cross bracing on the Main Jetty, Fisherman’s Wharf and Screw Pile Jetty;
• removal of infrastructure that was no longer required, including the steel wharf infrastructure and slipway north of the main jetty;
• removal of the redundant ‘Ro-Ro’ ramp at the end of the main jetty;
• replacement of failing access ramps on the main jetty (with platform stairs) and a significant number of girders and corbels that formed part of the jetty’s timber substructure; and
• rationalisation of the main jetty approach, removing a redundant portion.

The project formed part of the South Australian Government’s commitment to upgrade jetties, boat ramps and boating facilities across the state, as part of the Marine Stimulus Package.
