Early site establishment work starts for Majors Road Interchange

Thursday, 23 February 2023

Early work and site investigations to construct the Majors Road Interchange Project will begin next week, as procurement of the design and construction contract continues to progress.

The Australian and South Australian governments are jointly funding (50:50) the $120 million construction of new on/off ramps for the Southern Expressway at Majors Road.

The project will provide commuters in the southern suburbs with greater access to the Southern Expressway. It will also provide all commuters with improved access to the Glenthorne National Park – Ityamaiitpinna Yarta, Sam Willoughby International BMX Facility and Southern Soccer Facility via the Southern Expressway.

Local South Australian Aboriginal business RAW SA has been engaged to construct project site facilities adjacent to the Riding for the Disabled Association SA site, as well as continue site investigation works to help better understand the underground services and inform the project's detailed design.

The site investigation works are scheduled to start on Wednesday, 1 March 2023, with the construction of site facilities set to commence in the following weeks. All the works are expected to be completed by late April 2023, weather permitting.

To safely facilitate these works, some speed and lane restrictions may be required. Please take extra care when workers are on site and observe speed limits, lane restrictions and traffic controllers when travelling through the area.

Procurement for the interchange’s design and construction contract is expected to be completed in mid-2023, with major work expected to start in late 2023 and project completion by the end of 2025.

The proposed concept design, released in late 2022, has been developed to ensure minimal impact to the Glenthorne National Park – Ityamaiitpinna Yarta, with no portion of the National Park to be further isolated from any other area of the park. The current design also ensures no impact to significant vegetation, Glenthorne Farm or the O’Halloran Hill Recreational Park.
