Traffic study undertaken on Springbank Road

Tuesday, 21 February 2023

The South Australian Government is investigating traffic movements and pedestrian safety on Springbank Road.

The Springbank Road Traffic Safety and Access Report was recently completed following community concerns about pedestrian safety and difficulty accessing Springbank Road from side roads.

Community engagement will now commence to discuss the report’s findings and potential opportunities to improve pedestrian and cyclist safety and access.

The report was underpinned by surveys undertaken in September 2022 which informed analyses of pedestrian movements, pedestrian facilities, vehicle crash trends, traffic movements and public transport.

The key findings from these investigations include:

  • Traffic volumes on Springbank Road have increased from 21,000 vehicles per day in 2019 to 27,000 vehicles per day in 2022 following the upgrade of the Goodwood Road, Springbank Road and Daws Road intersection in 2021.
  • Movements in and out of Eliza Place at Springbank Road have both reduced considerably following the intersection upgrade. This suggests fewer vehicles are using local streets to avoid congestion at the Goodwood Road and Springbank Road intersection.
  • Drivers turning right out of Eliza Place, Kent Road and Strathcona Avenue are experiencing delays, observed to be more than two minutes during the day, particularly during peak periods. These delays are generally representative of what vehicles can experience accessing and moving through intersections on the arterial road network.
  • Pedestrian data associated with local schools and their enrolment catchments, which inform the potential routes students take to get to school, indicate there’s a high demand for students crossing Springbank Road between Eliza Place and Daniels Road.
  • Traffic data indicate there are few gaps in traffic to cross the road during peak periods.
  • Observations showed a relatively high number of cyclists crossed Springbank Road near Price Avenue, which coincides with a local bicycle route.

Community members can meet with the project team to share their feedback on Saturday, 25 February from 10.00am to 1.00pm, at Oxford Circus (corner of Springbank Road and Goodwood Road).
