Reduced speed limit to increase safety on New West Road

Wednesday, 14 December 2022

The speed limit on a section of New West Road in Port Lincoln has been reduced from 60km/h to 50km/h following requests from the local community.

The lower speed limit will improve safety on the busy stretch of road that goes past a hospital, childcare centres, and local shops, with an average traffic volume of 6,100 vehicles a day.

Between 2015 and 2020 there were two injury crashes on New West Road.

The Department for Infrastructure and Transport recently reviewed the speed limit on New West Road following concerns raised by the local community about pedestrian safety. As a result, the decision was made to implement the reduced speed limit.

The speed limit has been reduced to 50km/h from 50 metres west of Kurara Road through to the town.

A 50km/h speed limit is typically applied to roads in built-up areas which contain a higher concentration of pedestrians, vehicles and roadside development that generates frequent on-street parking.

The existing 80km/h speed limit adjacent to the undeveloped area, as well as a section of road with a 60km/h speed limit where the road has low levels of development, will be retained.
