HARBORS AND NAVIGATION ACT 1993

Former Notice No. 50 of 2022 (Temporary)

SOUTH AUSTRALIA – RIVER MURRAY

Mariners are advised that the Minister for Infrastructure and Transport under section 11 of the Harbors and Navigation Act 1993 (the Act), pursuant to section 67 of the Act has directed the following, in relation to the River Murray:

  1. 4 KNOT SPEED LIMIT
    • All vessels operating within 250 metres of any property partially or fully submerged
    • All vessels operating within 250 metres of any levee partially or fully submerged.
    • All vessels operating at night or in restricted visibility.

    (Item 1 Applies from the South Australian border through to the ferry landings at Wellington)

  2. 4 KNOT SPEED LIMIT
    • All personal watercraft (commonly referred to as Jet Skis) must not exceed 4 knots on any part of the River Murray

    (Item 2 Applies from the South Australian border through to the ferry landings at Wellington).

  3. COMPULSORY LIFE-JACKET WEAR ON VESSELS 12 METRES AND UNDER AT ALL TIMES
    • Must always wear a level 50 or above lifejacket on the open area while the vessel is underway or at anchor

    (Item 3 Applies from the South Australian border through to the ferry landings at Wellington)

  4. RESTRICTED AREAS – NEAR LOCKS AND WEIRS
    • No swimming, bathing or diving within 250 metres of a lock or weir
    • No operating unpowered vessels within 250 metres of a lock or weir includes canoes, kayaks, surf skis, row boats, other human powered vessels and aquatic toys.
  5. RESTRICTED AREAS – NEAR OVERHEAD POWER LINES IN A FLOODPLAIN

No vessel or any other water traffic (including canoes, kayaks, surf skis, rowboats or other human-powered vessels or aquatic toys) be operated or moored within 50 metres of an overhead powerline on a floodplain.

No swimming, bathing or diving within 50 metres of an overhead power line in a floodplain.

(Item 5 Applies from the South Australian border through to the Murray mouth in the floodplain.  The floodplain includes the area of flat or nearly flat land next to the River Murray which stretches outwards from the banks of its channel which experiences flooding during periods of declared High Flow or Flood by the South Australian State Emergency Services).

6.         NO VESSEL TO BE MOORED TO A LEVEE BANK

That no vessels or any other water traffic (including canoes, kayaks, surf skis, rowboats or other human powered vessels or aquatic toys) be moored, anchored, attached or secured in any way to any levee bank along the River Murray, including a floodplain.

(Item 6 Applies from the South Australian border to the Murray mouth).

Maximum penalty $10,000 may apply to any person or vessel operator that breaches these restrictions
