New online driver education program gets the green light from learner drivers

Wednesday, 30 November 2022

Learner drivers have overwhelmingly embraced the new education program myLs, with almost 85 per cent of novice drivers using the online option to get their learner’s permit during its first year.

Since the online driver education program launched about 12 months ago, 35,797 of 42,485 applicants for a learner’s permit in South Australia chose to use myLs rather than the traditional test at a Service SA centre.

The result is an overwhelming vote of support for the new program, which provides a flexible and interactive online learning space for people to obtain their learner’s permit. myLs focuses on comprehensive education rather than just cramming for a test, and includes important features like interviews with people who have been impacted by the devastation of road trauma.

myLs is designed to allow users to stop, start and learn at their own pace. Participants are encouraged to engage with other people, including parents and guardians, to ensure they understand road rules and feel safe behind the wheel from their very first journey.

Completing the course takes between four and six hours. It uses over 800 questions, activities, quizzes and challenges to reinforce and embed vital road safety messages prior to the final assessment.

myLs provides applicants access for up to 12 months, and during this time the theory test can be attempted as many times as necessary.

Even those who already hold a current learners permit or driver’s licence in South Australia can choose to undertake the myLs as a refresher course.

All learner drivers are still required to complete the mandatory supervised driving hours and pass a practical driving test to obtain a probationary licence.
