One million and counting! Passengers embrace electrified Gawler rail line

Friday, 21 October 2022

The one millionth trip has been taken on the newly electrified Gawler rail line - just four months after passenger train services returned to the northern suburbs.

The electrified line between Adelaide and Gawler has provided commuters a cleaner, greener, quieter and faster experience, with more than 10,500 passengers on average using the line each weekday since it reopened on 12 June this year.

Passengers are also embracing train travel across the entire rail network, with over a million trips taken across all lines in both August and September 2022 – a milestone not recorded since the pandemic began.

The Gawler Rail Electrification Project includes the delivery of new electric trains for the Gawler rail line, with the final trains to be delivered in 2023, meaning the line will be fully serviced by electric trains from mid-next year.

It also includes a refresh of 14 stations along the line, and upgrades to thirteen existing pedestrian crossings.

Five of these crossings have been completed, with the remaining eight to be activated in early 2023.
