Flagstaff Road upgrade provides safer and more efficient drive

Monday, 10 October 2022

More than 21,000 motorists each day are benefitting from the upgrade of Flagstaff Road, with two lanes of traffic now operating in both directions between Hyland Avenue and Bonneyview Road.

The additional lane installed in this section of Flagstaff Road under the $32.9 million enhancement is improving traffic flow and reducing traffic congestion and driver confusion, boosting efficiency and safety for motorists.

Prior to the upgrade, 800 metres of Flagstaff Road between Hyland Avenue and Bonneyview Road consisted of only three lanes, with the centre lane reversing daily to cope with peak-hour traffic in morning and evenings.

In addition to improving traffic flow, the new fourth lane provides room to overtake slow-moving traffic and allows emergency vehicles to proceed without being held up by other traffic.

Other works as part of the project include the construction of a new central median, new Shared Use Path on the eastern side of Flagstaff Road, new northbound bicycle lane, new and upgraded LED road lighting, new safety barrier, and installation of Intelligent Traffic Systems.

The project was funded by the South Australian Government with $32.9 million committed towards the project.

Around 40 full time equivalent jobs per year have been supported during the construction process.
