SA seniors loving free travel on public transport

Tuesday, 30 August 2022

SA Seniors Card holders have embraced free all-day travel on Adelaide Metro services, with patronage increasing by over 40 per cent in both morning and afternoon peak periods since the changes were introduced on 1 July 2022.

Seniors have welcomed the inclusion of free travel on public transport during weekday peak periods, with 43 per cent more seniors travelling between 7am and 9am and 45 per cent more between 3pm and 7pm in July, compared to the previous month.

With free travel any time on Adelaide Metro services for approximately 430,000 South Australian Seniors Card members, catching the bus, train or tram has become a simpler and more flexible way to get where you need to go.

Last month saw a total of 539,447 trips taken by Seniors Card holders – up from 477,178 in June. By the end of July, a total of 16,460 Seniors Card holders had received refunds on unused credit totalling $335,535.

The Glenelg tram and Seaford and Gawler line trains are the most popular services among seniors, while routes servicing Golden Grove, Prospect, Rostrevor, Henley Beach and Glenelg were among the most travelled bus routes – highlighting growing patronage from older passengers across the whole Adelaide network.

To access free travel, simply validate your Seniors Card each time you board a service or pass through barrier gates.

While you will not be charged, please ensure you still validate your card to help provide accurate patronage data and assist with future service planning.

Any remaining Adelaide Metro credit on Seniors Cards can still be refunded or transferred to a different metroCARD by visiting the Adelaide Metro InfoCentre at the Adelaide Railway Station.
