New E-Scooter trial in City of Unley

Monday, 14 February 2022

Following the success and popularity of e-scooters in the CBD and eastern suburbs, a new trial will now start in the City of Unley.

E-scooters will be available to operate on the streets of Unley from today, providing another transport option within the council area.

As part of the new trial, the current boundary of the City of Adelaide e-scooter trial has been extended to cover South Terrace through the southern parklands to Greenhill Road and into Unley.

The latest trial means that riders can now e-scoot around the CBD, the streets of Norwood, Payneham and St Peters (NPSP) as well as Unley, with arrangements managed by the respective councils.

E-scooter road rules apply, namely that riders:

  • Must be at least 18 years old
  • Must wear an approved bike helmet that is securely fitted
  • Must have proper control at all times and ride with due care and reasonable consideration for other persons
  • Must not ride next to each other
  • Must not carry passengers.

In general, use is permitted along footpaths and shared paths, at a maximum speed of 15km/h. However, e-scooters must be operated safely at all times, including riding slower if conditions require it.

However, within NPSP and now the City of Unley trials, there is an additional maximum speed limit for devices of 10km/h along footpaths adjacent to major arterial roads.

The three council e-scooter trials are currently approved to operate until 31 October 2022. Each participating council is responsible for approving individual operator permits to manage their fleet within the trial. More information on the trials is available on the respective council’s websites.
