More about Custom plates

What is a Custom plate?

An SA Custom plate allows you to customise your registration plate by choosing a unique combination of letters, numbers, colours and sizes.

Unlike Standard number plates, custom number plates offer you the opportunity to personalise your vehicle with a combination that holds personal significance, such as your name, initials or a special message.

Custom plates can be a way to express individuality, add a touch of personal style, say what you do, or simply stand out from other vehicles on the road.

What’s the difference between a Custom plate and a Personalised plate?

Both plates allow you to choose your own combination, but there are some unique differences that make Custom plates the most flexible plates available in SA.

Check the table below to compare.

How do I renew a Custom plate?

To renew your Custom plate in SA, simply follow the prompts to renew your number plate. If you have any other questions, please contact us at DIT.PlateEnquiries@sa.gov.au or call 1300 EZYPLATES.

How long do Custom licence plates take to arrive in SA?

Your Custom plates will be ready in about 10 working days.

You can collect them from your nominated Service SA Customer Service Centre or have them mailed to you for a $20 flat fee.

Why should you order a square number plate?

Square plates are unusual and will make your car stand out in a crowd. Some cars, such as vintage or Japanese cars, are designed to have square number plates rather than Standard plates. We recommend you measure the space available to make sure the plate will fit before you order square Custom plates.

What colour plates look good with what colour vehicle?

If you’re unsure what colour Custom plate pairs well with your vehicle, we recommend following the guide below:

  • White plates: These complement any coloured vehicle, providing a clean look.
  • Black plates: Perfect match for any luxury or darker-coloured vehicle, including black, blue, green, maroon and grey.
  • Silver plates: These perfectly compliment any vehicle with a metallic finish, including silver, grey, as well as white.
  • Gold plates: Ideal for creating a luxurious look and match red, black, blue, or dark green coloured vehicles.
  • Yellow & lemon plates: To achieve a vibrant look, we recommend pairing with white, yellow, green, and blue vehicles.
  • Blue plates: For a fresh and crisp look, try pairing a blue plate with a white, blue, yellow or red coloured vehicle.
  • Green plates: For a modern and earthy appearance, pair it with a white, silver, grey, black or green vehicle.
  • Red plates: For a striking and bold contrast, pair with a black, white, silver, grey, or dark blue vehicle, or go all over red.
  • Pink plates: These will create a bold and fun look paired with any white, silver, black, blue or pink vehicle.
  • Maroon plates: For a complementary look, pair it with a maroon, navy or black vehicle, or try a contrasting pop of class on white, grey or silver vehicles.

How do you attach Custom plates on a car or motorbike?

Licence plates can be attached to your vehicle with standard screws, however using anti-theft screws is the most secure option. These are available from any auto or car parts store. If you are having any issues with attaching your number plate, we recommend contacting your local auto service repairer for assistance.
